WHY CHOOSE LAKE STREET WORKS

We teach the skills that brings hope and success for the future.

We want to bring hope back to the community and we think a good way to do this is to help young people get great jobs after they graduate from high school. Lake Street Works is located in the heart of South Minneapolis, within the blocks vandalized in the 2020 riots.  We have a vision to build back our community one student at a time.

Construction jobs pay on average $23 per hour for entry level positions.  This is far better than working for minimum wage.  Plus learning the skills and choosing to be a carpenter, electrician, HVAC technician or plumber can be a career that pays even more plus benefits.  And a career that is for a lifetime!.

In addition to such skills, LSW will teach youth “life skills” needed to succeed in a job.  These skills include Personal Development, On the Job Work Behaviors, and Financial Literacy.

All classes will be taught by professionals and experts in the Construction trades.  These individuals will also help students get jobs after they graduate.

A program that pays students to attend?

All our students will receive stipends of $30 per class.  Which means every two weeks of classes, students can receive $120 deposited in their debit accounts. This is their money to spend or save.  In classes, we will discuss how they are using their money.

With the pay students receive - - they are going to be working hard and we want them to learn about checking accounts, saving, budgeting and investing.  We feel they need their own money to be able to really learn these skills.

In addition to these payments, an amount equal to 50% of their stipends will be placed in an investment fund so they can understand investing funds.  These funds are not the students until they graduate from the program.  If they do not graduate from the program they forfeit their investment account.

By learning at Lake Street Works this summer, students can earn approximately $420 in stipends and $210 in an investment account.  During the year they can learn and earn even more!
