Part-Time Youth Worker (Coach) 

Job Description

SUMMARY

Lake Street Works is an after-school career readiness program for 12th grade students from some of the lowest income communities of Minneapolis.  Here, students learn basic job skills necessary to compete for entry into a career in the construction trades.  Program curriculum also includes invaluable life skills like money management, communication, leadership, and conflict resolution, as well as employment preparation.

Duties and Responsibilities 
  • Recruits students through visits to Minneapolis high schools, churches, and community centers to speak with students, teachers, counselors, coaches, parents, and youth workers about Lake Street Works.

  • Meets with prospective students and their parents, one-on-one, answering questions about the program.

  • Develops student recruitment strategies including marketing materials, student specific advertising, parent outreach and sources of prospective students.

  • Builds ongoing relationships with students as a guidance counselor, mentor, and advisor.

  • Prepares and presents weekly reports on progress, significant wins, challenges, and resources needed for success for recruiting and graduating students.

  • Leads classroom instruction & trainings related to financial literacy and life skills.

  • Acts as the primary program connection to students and their families.

  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements 
  • High school diploma

  • Minimum of five years related work experience

  • Flexible/adaptable to varied schedules & work environment

  • Two professional references

  • Reliable transportation

  • Ability to pass drug and criminal background screening

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred 
  • Enjoys working with youth and families from diverse populations.

  • Ability to communicate and present effectively with various audiences.

  • High level of comfort with outreach to parents and school administration.

  • Able to work independently and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Able to work in a flexible, diverse, and enterprising environment.

  • Strong commitment to core values and high standards of professional conduct.

  • Experience with MS software.

  • Excellent organization and multi-tasking skills.

Work Schedule 

Monday - 10am-2pm

Tuesday - 10am-8pm

Thursday - 10am-8pm

Compensation is commensurate with experience & expertise.

Construction Trades Instructor

Job Description

SUMMARY

Lake Street Works is a 10-month after-school construction career preparation program for 12th grade students from the lowest-income highest-risk communities of Minneapolis.  Two nights per week, starting in July, we expose our students to a variety of trades in hopes of exciting them about the career opportunities available in the construction industry.  We’re looking for multiple instructors to help us inspire the next generation of high-character youth!

Tuesday & Thursday - 4:00pm - 8:00pm

Job Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Plan & lead hands-on task-based instruction in one or more of the trades listed above.

  • Act as career & industry resource for pathway exploration.

  • Work with Program Director to source tools, equipment, and materials necessary for instruction.

  • Assist program staff with workshop organization & tool upkeep.

  • Promote program needs to potential supporters when possible & appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Completion of a recognized trades training program or apprenticeship.

  • Teaching or training experience with youth or young adults.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with students of diverse populations.

Employer Notes 

  • No trade specific license or certification is necessary, but in-depth understanding of trades skills & safety is required.

  • Must pass a standard criminal background check.
